Former Triple-A right-hander Chris Chavez joined the RailCats for the stretch run late in the 2010 season.
Chavez, 25, came to the RailCats after being released by the Kansas City Royals in August 2010 following five seasons in their minor league system. Signed originally as an undrafted free agent, Chavez climbed up the Royals ladder quickly, putting up excellent numbers along the way. The tall, slender right-hander has a lifetime 21-7 record in 113 minor league games with a tidy 3.52 ERA.
A starter in 2007 – Chavez finished fifth in the Pioneer League with a 3.41 ERA – the Arizona native has been primarily a reliever as a pro. Chavez’s best season came in 2009 when he went 6-1 with a 1.95 ERA in 50.2 innings at Wilmington in the High-A Carolina League. His performance that season earned Chavez a promotion to Double-A and Triple-A before the end of the year, and Chavez was stout at Omaha (AAA) with a 3.00 ERA in 18.0 innings.
Originally from Kingman, Arizona, Chavez played two seasons at Division II power New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M.
