RailCats Internship Program
General Information
The Gary SouthShore RailCats Internship Program is designed to serve as an enriching experience for students planning to pursue a job in professional sports. It is our hope that a meaningful internship will compliment an individual’s educational background and prepare them for their career in sports.
Objective
The main objective of the program is to show students the many facets of a professional baseball organization and give them hands on experience in each department. To achieve this objective, we have designed a rotating internship program in which the interns will be involved in the following areas:
- Merchandise
- Box Office Operations
- Community Relations
- Marketing and Promotions
- Stadium Operations
- Media Relations
- Group Sales
Description
The internship program runs from May to the first weekend in September. Interns will rotate through a seven-station program during their time with the RailCats. Beyond their office duties, all interns will be assigned game day responsibilities coordinating with their department. All interns are considered full time staff, working regular office hours (9am-5pm) as well as ALL home games and other events as needed. Summer interns will earn $400/month.
Qualifications
The RailCats strongly believe the rotating experience helps an individual become a well-rounded sports professional. Thus, the RailCats have hired many interns as a full time staff member over the years. Therefore, we look for exceptional candidates possessing the skills below:
- Must be energetic
- Must be self-motivated
- Must be creative and organized
- Must have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
- Must have a desire to learn and work hard in a fast-paced environment
- Must be a college student obtaining a degree in Sport Management or a similar field
- Must be committed for the full summer
- Graphic design experience (Photoshop) is a plus
Projects
During this internship, interns will also select a project topic. A list of potential topics will be provided, but innovative ideas are strongly encouraged. This project is designed to let each intern create a meaningful report that will not only help the RailCats organization, but also become an asset to the individual’s portfolio. Project summaries will be submitted in writing and presented orally to the front office staff. Interns should make projects extremely detailed and organized. You will be presented with an example from a previous internship and should also periodically check in with the Internship Coordinator.
Resumes and cover letters should be submitted via email to Becky Kremer at bkremer@railcatsbaseball.com. Candidates will be contacted for interviews in March.
