GARY, Ind. — Tony
Cogan pitched six innings of shutout baseball, but Aaron Cook allowed
runs in the ninth and tenth as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks got their second
straight win over the RailCats 3-2 on Saturday night at U. S. Steel Yard.
Cogan squared
off with Fargo-Moorhead’s Scott Fogelson and the tandem sparkled in their
efforts. Fogelson gave up an RBI double to Steve Haake in the bottom of the
first and then began to dominate. Fogelson would only allow one hit over his
next six innings of work. Cogan did not give up a run on five hits in six
innings, striking out seven.
With Cogan in
line for the win, the RedHawks went to work against the RailCats bullpen in the
seventh. Jeff Fischer relieved Cogan and gave up a leadoff double to
Jeremiah Piepkorn and walked Mike Coles. Fischer was pulled in favor of Edwin
Walker who got Alan Rick to strikeout on a bunt attempt and then got Kole
Zimmerman to pop out. With two on and two out, Zach Penprase delivered an RBI
double to score Piepkorn and tie the game at 1-1. Neither Cogan or Fogelson
would score a decision.
The RailCats
finally got to the Fargo bullpen in the eighth. After a single by Jeff
Beachum to leadoff the inning, Mike Massaro sacrificed Beachum into
scoring position. Josh Giles (1-0) would enter in relief of Fogelson and would
get Rob Marconi to fly out as Beachum advanced to third. Jay Pecci
then caught the RedHawk defense napping as he laid down a two-out bunt single
to score Beachum from third and give the RailCats a 2-1 lead going into the
ninth.
Cook (0-1)
came into the game to close it out and after getting the first two batters
out, would give up single to Rick, would walk Zimmerman, and then Penprase
would deliver another RBI to tie the game. In the tenth, Cook continued to work
in relief. Yurendell DeCaster picked up a one-out infield single, Randall Simon
drew a walk, and Piepkorn singled to load the bases. With the infield drawn in,
Coles would chop a single into left over a leaping Beachum to give the RedHawks
a 3-2 lead.
With Yosandy
Ibanez on for the save, the RailCats put the tying run at third base with less
than two outs in the bottom of the tenth. With Massaro at third and Marconi at
first, Pecci grounded a ball to the third baseman DeCaster who threw home and
Massaro was tagged out by the catcher Zimmerman. Ibanez would strike out Haake to pick up his second save in as many nights and give the RedHawks
the series.
The RailCats
(4-5) and RedHawks (3-5) close out the three-game set on Sunday at 2 p.m. with
Gary’s Chris Jones (1-0) facing Fargo’s Nick Fellman (0-0). Coverage begins at
1:56 p.m. at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
