GARY, Ind. — Brad Mumma
allowed only one run over 7.2 effective innings to lead the Joliet JackHammers
to a 7-1 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats Sunday afternoon at U. S. Steel
Yard, ending the RailCats four-game winning streak.
Mumma (3-1) started the first
and last games of the now completed six-game series between the two clubs, and
those two games were the only two Joliet victories in the set. Mumma did
not allow a run until the eighth Sunday and held the RailCats to nine hits –
eight of which were singles – and walked only one. Mumma gave up the
RailCats only run in the eighth when
Mike Rohde ripped a two-out double
off the wall, scoring
Rob Marconi and extending Rohde’s hitting streak
to 12 games.
Joliet got the only runs they
needed in the third on a two-run Joey Gomes home run – his second off the year
– against RailCats starter
Chris Jones (1-1). Jones went on to
allow single runs in the fourth and fifth before being relieved, allowing four
earned runs on seven hits, the most he’s allowed this year. The
JackHammers added three more runs in the eighth inning, ending the ‘Cats
bullpen’s scoreless inning streak at 15.2 IP.
The RailCats out-hit the
JackHammers 10-9 but stranded 10 men on base, including at least one in seven
of nine innings.
Brett Wallace led the RailCats with his first
three-hit day of the season, going 3-for-4, and
Eric McNamee had two
base hits. Wallace is now 7-for-11 in his last three starts, raising his
batting average to .283. Thon and Phil Avlas each homered for Joliet,
which also go three RBI from Adam Klein.
The RailCats (10-12) move on to
Winnipeg Monday night to start a four-game series against the league-leading
Goldeyes (14-5) at 7 p.m. at Canwest Park. Lefty
Tom Thornton (2-2,
6.85 ERA) will start for the RailCats against Winnipeg’s Ace Walker (2-0,
2.45). That game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM and online at
www.railcatsbaseball.com.
Notes: The RailCats four-game
winning streak was their longest this season … when Thon homered in the third
inning it marked the first time the JackHammers scored first in the six-game
series … the RailCats won four of six games in the home-home-and-home set that
began Tuesday at U. S. Steel Yard … Jones’ four runs allowed were the most by a
RailCats starter since Tuesday, also the last RailCats loss.
