RailCats Bring on Former Giants Prospect Caleb Curry
» All News

GARY, Ind. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats have added some new blood to their outfield mix, agreeing to terms with former Big Ten star and San Francisco Giants farmhand Caleb Curry on a contract for the 2010 season, the team announced today.

Curry, 23, comes to the Northern League after two seasons with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in the rookie Northwest League.  Selected in the 14th Round of the 2008 Major League Entry Draft by the Giants, Curry batted .270 in his rookie season with a robust .349 on-base percentage.  The speedy outfielder also stole 13 bases in 68 games and legged out nine extra-base hits, including his only professional home run.  Last season, Curry played in 43 games for the Volcanoes and matched his career high with seven doubles.

A native of Alexandria, Minn., Curry was a two-time All-America at Minnesota State Community Technical College before transferring to the University of Iowa in 2007.  Curry continued to put up big numbers with the Hawkeyes, earning back-to-back All-Big Ten Second Team honors and hitting .396 with a school-record 45 stolen bases as a senior.  The right-hander led Iowa in batting, doubles, home runs, RBI and stolen bases in 2008 and finished his two-year Hawkeyes career with 138 hits and 106 RBI in only 106 games.

Curry becomes the 11th player to sign a contract for the upcoming season, joining fellow outfielders Adam Klein and Mike Massaro, infielders Jeff Beachum, Chris Carrara and Mike Rohde, catcher Matt Lenski, and pitchers Aaron Cook, Zach McClellan, Andy Paulun and J.J. Potrikus.  The RailCats expect to have at least 28 players in camp when the team opens Spring Training May 6 at U. S. Steel Yard.

The first chance fans will get to see the 2010 RailCats comes Saturday, February 20 at 10 a.m. at the team’s second annual Fan Fest, hosted by the Radisson Hotel in Merrillville.  Discount presale Fan Fest tickets are on sale now by calling the RailCats at 219.882.2255 or visiting www.railcatsbaseball.com.
