RailCats Unable to Sweep Wingnuts with 10-4 Loss

WICHITA, Kan. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats (29-24) were unable to complete the sweep in Wichita as the Wingnuts (36-16) defeated the RailCats by a score of 10-4. Wichita scored its eight runs in the third and fourth innings to salvage the third game in the series.

The game’s scoring began in the third inning. Wichita’s first three batters reached before Matt Chavez hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Christian Stringer. Zac Fisher followed with an RBI single scoring Brent Clevlen to make the score 2-0. Martin Media made the score 3-0 with an RBI single of his own that scored T.J. Mittelstaedt.

After Richard Prigatano struck out swinging for the second out in the third, the Wingnuts tallied four two-out runs to put extend their lead. Zac Fisher scored on a wild pitch, Stringer hit a two-run RBI single (scoring on the play were Medina and Leo Vargas) and then Clevelen drove in Harrison Kain to allow Wichita to lead by seven runs after three innings.

In the fourth, Vargas plated Medina with an RBI single to make the score 8-0. Medina reached base with a two-out single before advancing to second on Prigatano’s walk.

The RailCats got on the board in the top half of the sixth when Frank Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Cameron Newell to score. Newell reached base with a leadoff single. He advanced to second on Tyler Sullivan’s first RailCat base hit; and then to third on Reggie Wilson’s groundout to second.

The Wingnuts added two insurance runs in the eighth inning. Fisher knocked in Clevlen with an RBI double. Fisher scored on a Medina RBI base knock to make the score 10-1.

Gary did not fall without a fight. In the ninth inning, Wilson led off with a single and advance to second on a Colin Willis single. They both scored on Wilfredo Gimenez’s first home run of the season to make the score 10-4.

The top six RailCat hitters in the order each reached base at least once. Willis and Giminez were the only two RailCats to reach base twice, as they both had multi-hit games for Gary.

Braulio Torres-Perez (5-3) pitched four innings for the RailCats and allowed eight earned runs on nine hits, walked six, and struck out three in the loss. Torres-Perez has lost three of his last four decisions. Jake Matthys pitched three shutout innings in relief for the RailCats. He only allowed a hit and struck out two.

Tim Brown (1-0) recorded a victory in his season debut for the Wingnuts by only allowing one earned run in six innings of work. He allowed five hits, no walks, and struck out two.

Gary returns home on Friday, July 14th for the start of 12 home games in 15 days. Friday’s game vs. Salina is Jimmy Buffet Night and another Fireworks Friday. We'll have cheeseburger and margarita specials all around the ballpark and remember to stick around after the game for an explosive Fifth Third Bank Fireworks show!

First pitch in the series opener against the Stockade is at 7:10 p.m. Two-time All-Star Charle Rosario (6-4, 3.05) make his league-high 14th start for the RailCats while Salina has yet to announce their starter.
