RailCats shutout 10-0 by X’s in rain-shortened contest

GARY, Ind. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats were unable to muster a run against the Sioux City Explorers as Gary fell to Sioux City 10-0 in a rain-shortened affair. Gary (34-26) did not advance a runner past second base on Friday in the loss and have now dropped back-to-games.

Sioux City (28-29) ended the scoreless drought with a five-run top of the fifth to take the opening lead of the series. Joe Bennie brought in the first run of the series with an RBI single through the left side before Jayce Ray followed with an RBI fielder’s choice. Tony Campana extended the Explorers’ lead to 3-0 after stealing home. Tyler Ogle increased the Sioux City lead to four with an RBI double down into the field corner before Levon Washington brought home Ogle with an RBI single to center for the final run of the frame.

Sioux City doubled their lead in the sixth with another five-run inning. Jonathan Gonzalez hit a two-run home run for his first professional long ball to extend the lead to seven. Tanner Vavra scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0 before Ray brought home Campana with an RBI triple to right-center. Ogle delivered the final run of the game with an RBI groundout, resulting in a 10-0 defeat for the RailCats.

Aryton Costa (0-1) gave up eight earned runs in five-plus innings in the loss. The right-hander allowed 14 hits, walked none and struck out three in his season debut.  Kevin McCanna (5-0) did not allow a run in five innings for the Explorers in the victory. McCanna only gave up two hits, one walk and struck out eight during his first start of the season.

Gary continues their six-game homestand on Saturday night at 6:10 p.m. against the Sioux City Explorers. Two-time All-Star Charle Rosario (7-4, 3.26) faces Sioux City right-hander Chris Powell (0-0, 0.00) in the middle game of the series.

Saturday’s game is Blue Line Night and features an in-game Jersey Auction, Pre-Game Autographs and Kids Run the Bases. The RailCats honor our police officers on Blue Line Night with special blue line jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game on behalf of the Indiana State Police Fraternal Order of Police Memorial Foundation. Make sure you're here early as the team will be on the concourse for Pre-Game Autographs when gates open and remember to stick around after the game as all kids will have a chance to run the bases.
