FARGO, N.D. – A nine-run eighth inning and a season-high 17 hits led Gary to a 12-5 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday night. Gary overcame a five-run deficit and scored 12 unanswered runs in their third consecutive victory.
Fargo-Moorhead (41-35) took the opening lead with a two-out run in the third. Yhoxian Medina recorded the first extra-base hit of the night with a two-out double down the right field line before Devin Ahart brought him around to score with RBI single up the middle.
The RedHawks increased their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the fourth. Back-to-back RBI singles from K.D. Kang and Charlie Valerio made it 3-0 before Brandon Tierney brought Kang home on a sacrifice fly to right.
Kang gave Fargo-Moorhead their biggest lead of the night at five with a home run to right-center to begin the sixth. The home run was Kang’s ninth of the year and the first of the series.
Trailing 5-0 going in to the eighth, Gary (43-35) brought 13 to the plate and scored nine runs to take a 9-5 lead. Frank Martinez got the RailCats on the board with a ground-rule down the right field line. Wilfredo Gimenez made it a one-run game with a two-run single into right field. Alex Crosby tied the game at 5-5 with a pinch-hit, RBI double down the left field. With Crosby on second and two outs, Cole Fabio hit a grounder to Yhoxian Medina at short, however, Medina’s throw sailed Trever Adams at first, allowing Gary to take their first lead of the night. Colin Willis extended the Gary lead to 7-5 with an RBI double before Reggie Wilson increased the RailCats lead to three with an RBI infield single. Wilson scored the final run of the inning on the third error and final error from Medina.
Gimenez finished with a game-high four hits while Santiesteban extended his personal-best hitting streak to 17 games with two hits in the win. Nine different RailCats finished with at least one hit, eight of which were starters.
Gary increased their lead to 12-5 with three more runs in the ninth. Crosby brought in the first run of the inning with an RBI single before Fabio delivered a two-run single for the final two runs of the night.
Ayrton Costa (2-1) earned the win after allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk in a season-high seven innings. Steve Myers and Drasen Johnson tossed each tossed one scoreless inning of relief in the win.
Richie Tate (3-3) allowed six runs (two earned) on five hits over 0.2 innings in the defeat. Jose Almarante tossed seven shutout innings on seven hits, walked none and struck out five.
Gary and Fargo-Moorhead conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Newman Outdoor Field. Jeff McKenzie (1-3, 4.46) opposes Fargo-Moorhead All-Star Tyler Alexander (5-5, 2.52) in the final regular-season game of the year between the two teams.
Gary returns home to U.S. Steel Yard on Tuesday, August 15th for a three-game series vs. the Sioux Falls Canaries. Tuesday’s game is another CHN and Taco Tuesday.
