SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats fell to the Sioux Falls Canaries, 8-1, for the second straight game on Tuesday at Sioux Falls Stadium and have now dropped four of their last five. Despite losing on Tuesday, Gary still remains just one game out of first place in the Wild Card after Fargo-Moorhead’s loss and Kansas City’s win.
Sioux Falls (43-51) took the opening lead for the second straight game with a run in the first. Burt Reynolds recorded the first hit of the game with an infield single before Blake Schmit advanced him to second with a single to left. Jabari Henry then made it 1-0 with an RBI single to left, bringing in Reynolds to score from second.
The Canaries took their biggest lead of the series at seven with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Schmit was hit in the elbow to start the frame before Henry pulled his league-high-tying 24th home run of the season over the left field wall.
Ayrton Costa made his first relief appearance of the season, yielding four runs on seven hits, three walks and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. Darrell Thompson tossed 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in just his second American Association appearance. The southpaw walked the first batter he faced, however, retired the next seven he faced, four via the strikeout.
Bo Hellquist (3-2) recorded the win in his fifth start and first career appearance against Gary. The southpaw yielded just one run on three hits, four walks and three strikeouts in six innings.
