ST. PAUL, Minn. — A five-run eighth, six innings of one-run ball from southpaw Chris Nunn and three St. Paul home runs was too much for Gary to overcome as the RailCats fell to the Saints, 9-1, in front of 8,792 at CHS Field on Friday night. Gary has dropped three straight games for the first time in the second half of the season and are now tied with St. Paul for first place in the North Division.
Burt Reynolds gave St. Paul (44-34) the opening lead for the second straight night with a two-out home run on to the left field concourse in the first. The home run was Reynolds’ team-high 16th of the year and the Saints’ third of the series.
Brady Shoemaker increased the Saints’ lead to 3-0 with a two-out, two-run home run into the St. Paul bullpen in the fourth. The two-out blast was Shoemaker’s second in as many games and his ninth of the year.
Nathaniel Maggio made it 4-0 in favor of St. Paul with a solo home run to right-center in the fourth. The home run was Maggio’s sixth of the season and extended his career-high hitting streak to 12 games.
Gary (43-33) got their only run in the fifth, trimming the St. Paul lead to 4-1. Will Savage led off the inning with a double down the left field line before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Cole Fabio brought in Savage with an RBI groundout to the left side of the infield.
St. Paul put the game out of reach with five more runs in the eighth. Justin O’Conner drove in the first runs of the inning with a two-run double down into the left field corner before Joey Wong made it 8-1 with a two-run single to left. Max Murphy delivered the final run of the inning with an RBI single to center.
Jeff McKenzie (4-9) was charged with his third straight loss in his league-high third complete game of the year. The southpaw allowed a career-high nine runs (eight) earned on 12 hits, four walks (one intentional) and struck out one. Nunn (5-2) recorded his first win against the ‘Cats after yielding three runs, a walk and six strikeouts in his second start against Gary.
